Tuning Porous Networks in Polyimide Aerogels for Airborne Nanoparticle Filtration

Abstract: The suitability of monolithic polyimide aerogels as filter media for removal of airborne nanoparticles was investigated in this work by considering two solvents, N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) and dimethylformamide (DMF) for tuning of meso- and macropore content. Polyimide gels were synthesized from the chemical reactions between solutions of pyromellitic dianhydride, 2,2'-dimethylbenzidine, and 1, 3, 5-triaminophenoxylbenzene. The gels were dried via supercritical drying in CO to obtain the aerogels. The porosity … Show more

“…[180] Aerogel air filters based on modern polymers, such as polystyrene (PS) and PI, were fabricated by supercritical drying of their corresponding gels. [181,182] In addition, inorganic graphene aerogel air filters were produced by freeze drying of GO hydrogel and subsequent solvent exchange with water to carry out conventional freeze drying. [183] Inorganic hydroxyapatite (HAP) aerogel air filters were obtained by freeze drying aqueous slurries containing hydrothermally produced HAP.…”

“…As a consequence, scCO2 is largely used in the production of nanoparticles, foams, aerogels, and membranes based on linear [85][86][87] or cross-linked [88][89][90][91][92] PIs. These materials have interesting features (high porosity, tunable shrinkage, nano-and micro-cavities, high surface area, ultralow dielectric constant, and mechanical resilience) that open up new possibilities in the applicability of PI-based systems such as catalytic systems, separation membranes, aviation, aerospace, construction, and others [93][94][95][96][97].…”

“…TiO 2 -CA nano ber webs were placed at the bottom of a sample holder on a wide-mesh metal net to support the specimen. The % penetration of sodium chloride particles passing through the TiO 2 -CA nano ber webs was determined by the relative particle concentration upstream and downstream of the sample (Zhai and Jana 2017).…”
