There is a large worldwide demand for light olefins (C2=–C4=), which are needed for the production of high value-added chemicals and plastics. Light olefins can be produced by petroleum processing, direct/indirect conversion of synthesis gas (CO + H2) and hydrogenation of CO2. Among these methods, catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 is the most recently studied because it could contribute to alleviating CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. However, due to thermodynamic reasons, the design of catalysts for the selective production of light olefins from CO2 presents different challenges. In this regard, the recent progress in the synthesis of nanomaterials with well-controlled morphologies and active phase dispersion has opened new perspectives for the production of light olefins. In this review, recent advances in catalyst design are presented, with emphasis on catalysts operating through the modified Fischer–Tropsch pathway. The advantages and disadvantages of olefin production from CO2 via CO or methanol-mediated reaction routes were analyzed, as well as the prospects for the design of a single catalyst for direct olefin production. Conclusions were drawn on the prospect of a new catalyst design for the production of light olefins from CO2.

The natural sunlight‐driven conversion of CO2 into valuable C2+ products is urgently being pursued at ambient pressure, yet it poses a substantial challenge. Herein, a bifunctional Cu‐promoted CoFe alloy catalyst is designed for the natural light‐driven CO2 hydrogenation into light olefins. Under a weak solar‐irradiation intensity of 0.45 kW m−2 (0.45 sun), the optimal catalyst exhibits excellent activity and selectivity, with an impressive 73.7% selectivity for C2+ hydrocarbons and an outstanding 56.5% selectivity for C2‐4 olefins, which is the best catalyst for C2+ hydrocarbons photosynthesis from natural sunlight to date. The bifunctional design of the catalyst combines the advantages of both metallic Cu and CoFe alloy components, providing a synergistic effect that enhances the CO2 hydrogenation performance. The Cu promoter plays a crucial role in enhancing the adsorption of CO2 and hydrogen spillover, while the CoFe alloy provides a stable coupling site of the C1 intermediate for promoting the C2‐4 olefins. This study provides new insights into the design of bifunctional catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation and opens up new possibilities for sustainable production of light olefins from renewable resources.

CO 2 hydrogenation is the most efficient way to achieve the goal of "Carbon Neutral," and the transition metals (Mn, Co, Ni, Cu)embedded faveolate ZnFe 2 O 4 were fabricated and then evaluated with a CO 2 hydrogenation test. The systematic investigation of the effect of the introduced transition metals on the catalytic performance revealed that the activity was influenced by the surface structure, especially by the surface FeÀ C percentages. The introduction of Zn could increase CO 2 adsorption, thus promoting the reverse water gas shift (RWGS) reaction, which is considered the first step during CO 2 hydro-genation. The surface FeÀ C species played a significant role during the Fischer-Tropsch (FÀ T) synthesis, specific to the carbon chain growth process. Among all catalysts, Co-doped ZnFe 2 O 4 exhibited the highest surface FeÀ C percentage; therefore, it exhibited the optimal CO 2 conversion, C 2 + selectivity, C 2 -C 4 space-time yield, and olefin/paraffin ratio, which were 42.12 %, 81.26 %, 34.64 %, and 40.25 %, respectively. Furthermore, the introduced Co species can also act as active sites to enhance the activation and dissociation of CO 2 , as confirmed by theoretical adsorption calculations.
