Tunable tribological properties in water-based lubrication of water-soluble fullerene derivatives via varying terminal groups

Abstract: In this paper, three kinds of water-soluble fullerene derivatives were synthesized via electrophilic addition reaction and cycloaddition reaction, respectively. The chemical composition characterizations of these derivatives indicated the successful preparation of C 60 (OH) x , C 60 (C(COOH) 2 ) x and C 60 (OH) x (NHCH 2 COOH) y fullerene derivatives. The aggregation and morphology characterizations showed that the three kinds of derivatives had an ideal spherical aggregating structures and excellent dispersib… Show more

“…Moreover, unique photo-physical, photo-chemical, and tribological properties in C 60 and derivatives are implemented widely in various fields such as catalysis (1,2), lubrications (1,3), solar cells (4,5), and biomedicals (6)(7)(8)(9)(10)(11). As C 60 is spherical in shape, small in size, and has capability to generate reactive oxygen species, such as superoxide anion radical (O 2 -• ) and hydroxyl radical ( .…”

“…Many kinds of additives in water have been studied to improve the problem. Recently carbon nanomaterials such as fullerene, carbon nanotubes, and graphene (oxide) have been studied as the additives of water lubrications for their good tribological properties (Kinoshita et al, 2013;Liu et al, 2012;Song & Li, 2011) These carbon nanomaterials above mentioned have graphite structures composed of sp 2 bonding. In carbon nanomaterials, only diamond nanoparticles (DNPs) have single crystal diamond structure composed of sp 3 bonding, with a size of less than 10 nm.…”
