Tunable lens using dielectric elastomer sandwiched by transparent conductive liquid

Abstract: We propose and demonstrate a compact tunable lens with high transmittance using a dielectric elastomer sandwiched by transparent conductive liquid. The transparent conductive liquid not only serves as the refractive material of the tunable lens but also works as the compliant electrode of the dielectric elastomer. The overall dimensions of the proposed tunable lens are 16 mm in diameter and 10 mm in height, and the optical transmittance is as high as 92.2% at 380–760 nm. The focal power variation of the tunabl… Show more

“…In 2021, Cheng et al designed a liquid lens with two cavities separated by a dielectric elastomer membrane. [158] The conductive liquid filled in the cavity was used not only as the refraction material of the lens but also as the flexible electrode of the dielectric elastomer, which could obtain good light transmittance and a large focusing range of 42.18 mm.…”

“…2 Currently, common flexible electrodes for DEA include carbonbased electrodes, 3 metal film electrodes, 4 gel electrodes, 5 and liquid electrodes. 6 In addition to flexible electrodes, the use of multilayer-stacked DEA structures can significantly improve DEA performance by reducing the drive voltage while maintaining the driving force. 7 Multilayer DEA has been widely used in soft robots, 8 such as crawling robots, 9 flapping-wing aerial robots, 10,11 and jumping robots.…”
