Tunable clathrates

Abstract: Investigation of the selectivity of a diol organic host for mixtures of DMF and DMSO, showed the formation of five inclusion compounds in which the stoichiometry varies in discrete steps and is determined by the composition of the liquid guest mixture; the structures of these compounds are described.

“…In one such study previously conducted, 11 the selectivity of the diol host compound trans-9,10-dihydroxy-9,10-bis(p-tertbutylphenyl)-9,10-dihydroanthracene for mixtures of dimethylformamide (DMF) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was investigated and the results show the formation of five distinct inclusion compounds in which the ratio of the two guests varies in discrete steps and is determined by the composition of the liquid guest mixture from which the inclusion compound is formed.…”

“…Recently, host–guest interaction-mediated chemical separations with crystalline materials have been widely explored. 5 For example, macrocyclic host-based nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) have been recognized as one of the most promising adsorbents due to their outstanding performance in the separation of various structurally similar organic compounds. 6 A particular feature of these materials is the ability to differentiate molecules with slight structural differences by their intrinsic porosity through size/shape-fit and some weak C–H⋯O and C–H⋯π interactions.…”
