Tumours of the ribs: experience with 47 cases

Abstract: Since the likelihood of malignancy cannot be excluded, all rib tumours should be considered malignant until proven otherwise. Therefore, prompt intervention is necessary and wide and radical initial excision of the involved rib is advocated.

“…Most chondrosarcomas are treated by wide ªen blocº excision whenever possible [2,3,5,8,12,13,14], whereas the treatment of enchondroma is much less aggressive and radical (e. g., curettage with bone graft, marginal resection, or careful follow-up) [1,2,3,4,8]. Misdiagnosis of a chondrosarcoma as a benign enchondroma results in inadequate treatment (e. g., marginal excision) and a very high percentage (ca.…”

“…On the other hand, misdiagnosis and mistreatment of enchondroma sometimes cause functional impairment and add to the patient's suffering [1,3,4]. But since a definite diagnosis remains often difficult, some authors insist that the treatment of choice for both enchondroma and chondrosarcoma of the rib is wide excision, including the previous biopsy trajectory [5,14]; others advocate that the treatment of rib lesions, suspected of being malignant on medical imaging, is wide resection without biopsy, because seeding of malignant cells is a well-known phenomenon [2,3,4,8,10,13]. The reason is that cartilage tumor matrix is avascular and the growth of tumor cells does not depend on extrinsic vascular supply [2,4,10].…”

“…Metastatic carcinomas to the ribs are mentioned in the literature. 8 We had three cases of carcinoma metastatic to the ribs, and three to the sternum. Cases of epithelioid leiomyosarcoma and neuroendocrine tumors involving the ribs, as diagnosed in this series, are not mentioned in the literature.…”
