Tumour promoter activity in Malaysian Euphorbiaceae

Abstract: Summary Herbal medication has been practised by the rural Malaysian Malays for a long time. However, the long-term side-effects have never been studied. In the present study, 48 species of Euphorbiaceae were screened for tumour-promoter activity by means of an in vitro assay using a human lymphoblastoid cell line harbouring the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome. Twenty-seven per cent (13 out of 48) of the species tested were found to be positive, and in four species, namely Breynia coronata Hk.f, Codiaeum varieg… Show more

“…It is important to note that the research conducted by Norhanom and Yadav in 1995 described the tumour-promoting activity of several Malaysian plants belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, including Euphorbia atoto, which was tested in vitro on a human lymphoblastoid cell line harbouring the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome. Based on this observation, the authors pointed out that regular use of E. atoto could well be an etiological factor for the promotion of tumours among rural Malaysian peoples [27].…”

“…E. prostrata at a dose of 750 mg relieved the symptoms of bronchial asthma [ 42 ] while in a dose of 100 mg once daily for 14 days, it is useful in ameliorating the signs and symptoms associated with hemorrhoids [ 43 , 44 ]. There are several studies on a possible tumor promoter activity of E. milii chemical constituents [ 45 – 47 ]; however, an in-vivo study contradicts this activity [ 32 ]. Moreover, the tumor induction property of various species of Euphorbia is a long-term effect and is not a concern for their short term use after in-vivo administration.…”

“…Cytotoxicity of methanol extracts and alkaloids content of C. variegatum Petra were assessed against hepatocellular carcinoma, human Caucasian breast adenocarcinoma, colon cell line and lung carcinon and proved to be active with activity range of 17.3% -98% (Hassan et al, 2013). While in Malaysian cultivars, tumour-promotor activity was observed in human lymphoblastoid cell line harbouring the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome, Notice from the regular users of this plant (Norhanom and Yadav, 1995).…”
