Tumour lysis syndrome in a patient with intravascular spread from a recurrent epithelial ovarian cancer

Abstract: Tumour lysis syndrome is a potentially life-threatening oncological emergency most commonly encountered in patients with rapidly proliferating, treatment-responsive haematological malignancies. It is rarely observed in solid tumours and, to our knowledge, this is the first time that it has been reported in a cancer with an intravascular tumour extension. In this report, we describe a case of a woman who presented with recurrent ovarian cancer and was found to have tumour invading into her vasculature. The pati… Show more

“…Solid tumors that may spontaneously rupture typically have a rapid growth, high volume, or chemosensitivity [ 3 ]. Six cases of ovarian cancer complicated by TLS have been reported in the literature, and all were associated with chemotherapy [ 5 10 ]. Conversely, we report on a novel case of spontaneous TLS in a patient with ovarian cancer.…”

“…It has a mortality rate as high as 40% due to inadequate preventive treatment and delayed curative treatment [ 4 ]. There are few previous reports on TLS in patients with ovarian cancer, and all were associated with chemotherapy [ 5 10 ]. Herein, we are the first to report on a case of ovarian cancer with spontaneous TLS.…”

“…The first case referenced additionally utilized parenteral bicarbonate and furosemide in the patient's management [8,9]. A third case report documents fatal TLS after receiving carboplatin and paclitaxel chemotherapy for recurrent ovarian cancer with documented intravascular spread [10]. To our knowledge, TLS has not been reported in the literature as a complication of the treatment of ovarian cancer with docetaxel.…”
