Tumour location is a prognostic factor for survival in colonic cancer patients

Abstract: Colon cancer located in the transverse and descending colon is associated with poor prognosis. Comparison of results from different centres is difficult due to selection and classification differences, and different methods used for calculation of survival.

“…There was no metastatic lymph node involvement related to tumors of the hepatic flexure, transverse colon, and splenic flexure. It was previously suggested that colon cancer located in the transverse and descending colon is associated with a poor prognosis [8]. A recent Japanese multi-institutional, cross-sectional study including 806 T1 colorectal cancer patients showed metastatic lymph nodes in cancers originating from the transverse colon [9].…”

“…First, TCC is less common than tumors at other colon sites, with a reported incidence of around 10%. [9][10][11] Second, the proper operative procedures for TCC vary depending on the relative location of the tumor. Third, lymph node dissection around the middle colic vessels is technically demanding because of the proximity to the pancreas and duodenum.…”

“…Despite numerous studies aimed at identifying prognostic markers for colorectal cancer, tumour staging remains the key prognostic indicator, with other possible indicators including microsatellite instability26 and tumour location 27. In patients with non-metastatic colorectal cancer, adjuvant chemotherapy plays an important role in treatment: however the benefits even among this group are not entirely clear.…”
