Tumor Staging of Advanced Esophageal Cancer: Combination of Double-Contrast Esophagography and Contrast-Enhanced CT

Abstract: The diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced CT and double-contrast esophagography combined in staging advanced esophageal tumors is better than that of CT alone and thus has potential for estimating prognosis.

“…The chemotherapeutic regimens included two courses of chemotherapy of cisplatin (CDDP; 80 mg/m 2 of intravenous drip infusion, day 1) and 5-fluorouracil (5-FU; 800 mg/m 2 of continuous infusion, days [1][2][3][4][5]. For the chemoradiotherapy, the chemotherapeutic regimens included the administration of CDDP (70 mg/m 2 of intravenous drip infusion, day 1) and 5-FU (700 mg/m 2 of continuous infusion, days [1][2][3][4], and the concurrent radiation therapy was planned to be administered in daily fractions of 2 Gy for a total dose of 30-40 Gy (median 30.9).…”

“…The use of CT has continuously increased due to latest applications and the demand for better technology. 1 For the last few years, rapid technological advances in cross-sectional imaging modalities have combined with increased number of scanners to enable multiple new modes of imaging the oesophageal carcinoma. Radiologists are skilled in interpreting CT scans in the axial plane, but the development of MDCT coupled with faster reconstruction hardware and software has piqued deep interest in viewing the oesophagus planes other than the axial plane.…”

“…As the esophagus does not have an outer serosa, infiltration into adjacent mediastinal structures, including the aorta, tracheobronchial tree, and vertebral column, occurs readily. Despite remarkable advances in the various diagnostic modalities, the preoperative assessment of local tumors in esophageal cancer is still remarkably difficult …”
