Background: To compare iodine-125 ( 125 I) with ruthenium-106 ( 106 Ru) episcleral plaque radiation therapy in terms of the effectiveness and non-inferiority for choroidal melanoma treatment.Objective: To report the non-inferiority of new made iodine-125 ( 125 I) compared with ruthenium-106 ( 106 Ru) episcleral plaque radiation. Patients and Methods: A retrospective, non-randomized comparative case series. In this series the patients treated with 125 I and 106 Ru episcleral plaques for choroidal melanoma between September 2013 and August 2017 at Farabi Hospital are compared. Local control of choroidal melanomas after 125 I and 106 Ru plaques implantation and vision changes are the main outcome measures. Results: A total of 35 patients were identified ( 125 I = 15, 106 Ru = 20). No significant difference between two groups in visual acuity, diameter and thickness changes were observed after treatment. Multivariate linear regression (MLR) analysis showed that final diameter was only, independently and significantly, correlated with the pre-treatment diameter of the tumor (β = 0.59, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.29, 1.34, P = 0.003). The same MLR analysis for the final thickness and visual acuity, after adjusting for age and sex showed no significant difference between two groups. A single patient treated with 106 Ru had local tumor recurrence with no one in the 125 I group. No statistical difference in the rate of ocular complications was observed. Conclusion: The treatment with our 125 I plaques is as effective as 106 Ru plaques in controlling choroidal melanoma tumor and preserving the vision during the two and half year of follow-up. The complication rates are alike. It means that the effectiveness of 125 I is not only comparable to 106 Ru but also superior when the outcome of the interest is the thickness of the tumors.

Bibliographical references to online and printed articles, books, contributions to edited books and web resources generated by EndNote, Mendeley, RefWorks and Zotero were compared with manually written references according to the citation instructions in 15 biomedical journals and the NLM citation style. The fewest mistakes were detected in references generated by Zotero for 11 journals and the NLM style, while the second fewest number of mistakes was found in Mendeley. The largest number of mistakes for 9 journals was found in references generated by EndNote and in the other 4 journals the largest number of mistakes was detected in RefWorks references. With regard to the individual types of resources, the lowest number of mistakes was shown by Zotero, while RefWorks had the greatest number of mistakes. All programs had problems especially with generating the URL and the date of access in the reference to online documents. It was also found that several mistakes were caused by technical limitations of the reference managers, while other mistakes originated due to incorrect setting of the citation styles. A comparison showed that Zotero and Mendeley are the most suitable managers.

Blue-Light Fundus Autofluorescence Imaging following Ruthenium-106 Brachytherapy for Choroidal Melanoma

To describe changes in blue-light fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and corresponding alterations in optical coherence tomography (OCT) within the irradiation field after ruthenium-106 brachytherapy (RBT) for choroidal melanoma. Methods: Consecutive patients with choroidal melanoma were included in a retrospective case series. Patients were treated with RBT at a single institution. As part of their routine examination patients underwent multimodal imaging including ultrasonography, fundus photography, OCT, and FAF imaging (excitation = 488 nm). FAF images were analysed for changes within the irradiation field. Results: 31 patients (mean age 65.7 years) were treated with RBT for unilateral choroidal melanoma. Mean tumour height before therapy was 2.7 mm (SD 1.0). Mean follow-up time was 23.3 months (SD 13.3). Main FAF characteristics attributable to RBT emerged as increased FAF with speckled decreased FAF (FAF mottling) within the irradiation field and a rim of increased FAF at its border. OCT scans demonstrated loss of the ellipsoid zone and the external limiting membrane, thinning of the neurosensory retina, and alterations of the retinal pigment epithelium like clumping, migration, and atrophy. Conclusions: FAF changes in the irradiation field after RBT of choroidal melanomas follow a characteristic pattern that correlates with distinct OCT alterations. FAF and OCT imaging give additional information to monitor effects of RBT and, therefore, complement multimodal imaging techniques after plaque therapy.
