Tumor-reactive IgE antibodies in plasma of patients with gastrointestinal carcinomas

Abstract: A total of 208 plasma samples from 115 patients with gastrointestinal carcinomas and nine patients with other intestinal disease were examined for the presence of IgE tumor antibodies by a solid-phase radioimmunoassay. Approximately one-third of the patients gave significant reactions with gastrointestinal carcinoma extracts compared with normal tissue extracts. Absorption with tumor and normal tissue extracts, with type AB human red cells, and with CEA indicated tumor specificity in some of the samples so exa… Show more

“…Elevated serum IgE levels as prognostic indicators of malignancy have been suggested for breast cancers, carcinomas of the oral cavity, cervix and uterus, as well as bronchial carcinomas, compared to a control population (Blondal & Nou, 1981; Ownby et al ., 1982; Jankovic et al ., 1985; Vijayakumar et al ., 1986 Lal et al ., 1988). IgE tumour antibodies have been found in the plasma of gastrointestinal carcinoma patients, which decreased or disappeared after surgical treatment (Berczi et al ., 1983). Elevated serum IgE levels have also been found in Hodgkin's disease patients (Wiemels et al ., 2004).…”

“…A potential link between cancer and the immune system, particularly IgE, has been investigated by numerous researchers, with varied results (Winters & Heiner, 1976; Blondal & Nou, 1981; Ownby et al ., 1982; Berczi et al ., 1983; Jankovic et al ., 1985; Levo et al ., 1985; Vijayakumar et al ., 1986; Lal et al ., 1988; Eckschlager et al ., 2004; Wiemels et al ., 2004). However, there has been little or no research on the role of IgE in the pathogenesis and development of neurofibromatosis, particularly in neurofibromas and plexiform neurofibromas.…”

“…Moreover, the whealand-flare reaction could be transferred to healthy volunteers by the Prausnitz-Küstner test, in which the patient's serum was first injected intradermally and the tumor extract was injected into the same site 24 h later [22]. Tumorreactive IgE antibodies were also demonstrated in this laboratory by an appropriate "double-antibody" test in approximately one-third of patients with colon cancer [5]; these lgE antibodies decreased or disappeared 8-13 days after surgical removal of the tumor.…”

“…An additional observation is that in SJL mice, an strain which is genetically suppressed for IgE production, there is a high incidence of spontaneous lymphoreticular neoplasms [7], Furthermore, an IgE response di rected against tumor antigens has been described in the mouse [8] and human [9], but its importance in the in vivo host resistance against the tumor is not known.…”
