Tumor marker response to SARS‐CoV‐2 infection among patients with cancer

Abstract: Background Inflammatory responses from benign conditions can cause non‐cancer‐related elevations in tumor markers. The severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) induces a distinct viral inflammatory response, resulting in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19). Clinical data suggest carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen 19–9 (CA 19–9), and cancer antigen 125 (CA 125) levels might rise in patients with COVID‐19. However, available data excludes cancer patients, so little is kn… Show more

“…As reported, smoking can increase the expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in lung tissues, which is one of the binding receptors of SARS-CoV-2 ( Ponti et al., 2020 ). Additionally, old age, which is accountable for reduced effectiveness in the immune system, is partially responsible for the increased prevalence and severity of infectious diseases ( Gunn et al., 2022 ). This could explain why the male, elderly patients and those with any comorbidities, especially with hypertension and diabetes, were more likely to develop into severe cases.…”

“…Given patients with previous or current history of cancer were excluded in this study, ProGRP, CYFRA21-1, SCC reflected more the condition of inflammation than the tumor risk. It is believed that inflammatory responses from benign conditions can cause non-cancer-related elevations in tumor markers ( Gunn et al., 2022 ).…”

“…If the amount of CA125 does not change or rises following treatment, it could indicate that the cancer is not responding. After treatment, an increased CA125 result could indicate that cancer has returned [ 97 , 101 ]. One of the factors that affect the CA125 concentration is fluid effusion and retention.…”

“…A case report of a patient being treated for ovarian cancer noted a transient elevation in CA-125 following SARS-CoV-2 infection without evidence of cancer progression on standard imaging, raising the possibility that SARS-CoV-2 infection may increase CA-125 independent of cancer recurrence or progression ( Smith et al, 2020 ). Another recent report of a patient with ovarian cancer showed a temporary increase in CA-125 following a mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, however it is unknown whether she had simultaneous disease progression ( Gunn et al, 2022 ).…”
