Tumor de células gigantes costal ocupando todo o hemitórax

Abstract: The authors report the case of a 28-year-old female patient with a giant cell tumor originating from the rib. The tumor, measuring 25 × 17 cm, occupied the entire hemithorax and caused atelectasis of the left lung. This tumor was a benign mesenchymal neoplasm, which rarely affects the ribs. A thoracotomy involving en bloc resection of the chest wall and tumor was performed. Despite the large dimensions of the tumor, complete resection was possible, and lung function was restored. Keywords: Neoplasms; Giant cell… Show more

“…This delayed presentation probably contributed to the extremely large tumor size found at the time of surgical resection. While multiple cases of GCT originating from the rib have been reported, the two-dimensional span of 28.0 × 24.0 cm resected in our patient appears to be the largest to date (Table 1) [4, 814]. …”

“…GCT consists of proliferation of multinucleated giant cells in the stroma of spindle-shaped mononuclear cells, which are derivatives of monocytes. 3 The multinucleated cells resemble osteoclasts, but are larger and can contain more than 100 nuclei (average 10 to 50). The ratio of cells that form within the same focus may vary.…”

“…As the lesion grows, it can encompass the entire circumference of the bone, causing rupture of the cortical bone, but a periosteal reaction is rarely seen. [1256]…”
