Tuberculous pseudoaneurysm of the ascending aorta

Abstract: Increase in the incidence of drug resistance and association with HIV has led to a resurgence of tuberculosis. However, tubercular arteritis continues to remain a rare entity with a prelidection for the thoracic aorta. We report a tubercular ascending aortic pseudoaneurysm in a patient already on treatment for disseminated tuberculosis who underwent successful surgical repair and also review literature pertaining to this entity.

“…AAP is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of atherosclerosis, infections, blunt chest trauma, trans-catheter procedures or, more frequently, surgical interventions. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Albeit inherent aortic weakness in congenital bicuspid valve dysplasia could be a predisposing factor, 21 the vast majority of cases is caused by loosening of aortic purse-string at the canulation site. AAP may remain clinically silent for a long time until compression of the surrounding structures or mass rupture, with resulting life-threatening hemodynamic collapse, ensues.…”

“…Ascending aorta pseudoaneurysm (AAP) is an infrequent complication of atherosclerosis, infections, chest trauma, trans-catheter procedures or, more often, cardio-thoracic surgery. [1][2][3][4][5][6] Potential for rupture or compression of the surrounding structures by the expanding mass mandates emergent repair. 7 Since surgical approach carries high morbidity and mortality, 8,9 transcatheter option is nowadays emerging as a cost-effective alternative therapeutic option.…”
