Tuberculosis in Russia. Its History and Its Status Today

Abstract: The history of the Russian tuberculosis (TB) program, dating from the second part of the 19th century until today, is presented, and its achievements and failures are analyzed. The epidemiology of TB is described, and the effects of the TB program initiatives are described and analyzed. Multidrug-resistant TB and HIV coinfection represent severe threats to TB control effectiveness in Russia. New TB control strategies in the present-day epidemiological climate call for important shifts in TB facilities' network… Show more

“…The prevalence of tuberculosis was higher in the eastern parts in borders of Russia about ten times more than Moscow. The control and treatment programs for tuberculosis have been recovered in recent years that resulted, the tuberculosis incidence statistics is decreased [17]. c) Kazakhstan Kazakhstan located in the north of Iran, the rate of tuberculosis incidence in 1995 was 135 case per 100000 population that increased to 196 case in 2000 and the incidence rate grown to 233 per 100,000 population in 2004 and then reduced slightly to 139 in 2013 [1].…”

“…Thus, MDR-TB incidence increased from 4.6 to 5.2 per 100 thousand of population, and the proportion of patients with MDR-TB among persons with bacterial excretion at pulmonary tuberculosis was 47.3%. At the same time, the bacterial load of respiratory material of patients with MDR/XDR-TB does not differ from that in the drug sensitivity tuberculosis, indicating the viability of the pathogen, even with a wide range of its resistance to anti-TB drugs and high epidemiological risks of such strains [2]. …”

“…6 In Russia, if the current trends continue, the incidence of drug-resistant TB could be higher than the incidence of drug-sensitive TB within the next few years. 7 Prisons seem to be places where the incidence of TB (including drug-resistant forms) is particularly high. 7,8 In China, a recent survey concluded that the proportion of MDR-TB cases among new and previously treated patients is 5.7 % and 25.6 %, respectively, and the total number of MDR-TB cases is about 110,000.…”
