Tuberculosis as a risk factor for systemic lupus erythematosus: results of a nationwide study in Taiwan

Abstract: A previous study, with relatively small number of patients, showed that prior Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB) may precipitate SLE in patients from endemic areas. The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationship between prior TB infection and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) from the National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD) in Taiwan. Cases of SLE and TB were identified from the NHIRD with corresponding ICD-9 codes 710.0 and 011-018, respectively, from January 2000 to December 2008. A t… Show more

“…The SLE mortality risk estimate for surgical hospitalisation is lower than that for all-cause hospitalisation 21. Our result showed a high proportion of men among the patients with SLE, an intriguing fact consistent with previous cohort studies in Taiwan 22 23. Similar to the concurrence of rheumatoid arthritis and SLE reported in an Australian case series,24 an increased prevalence of rheumatoid arthritis was found among our lupus patients.…”

“…Although these organ systems could directly be affected by SLE [29], [30], the increased visits might also be caused by infections of these organs. A study based on the Taiwan NHI database demonstrated an increased risk of tuberculosis in patients before their diagnosis of SLE [31]. Nevertheless, the risks of other infectious diseases remain to be investigated.…”

“…10 Furthermore, some systemic diseases that seem to be related to TB have been reported, such as acute coronary syndrome, liver cirrhosis, systemic lupus erythematosus and Parkinson's disease. [11][12][13][14] Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a disease of the circulatory system that decreases blood flow to peripheral tissues, is primarily caused by atherosclerosis and induces tissue injury. The prevalence of PAD is approximately 12-14% in the general population, and the prevalence increases with age to affect 20% of patients over 75 years.…”
