“…Some recent studies have also addressed the question of identifying adaptive genes by analyzing transcriptional changes upon water stress in drought-adapted Solanum tuberosum ssp. andigena (Schafleitner et al 2007;Vasquez-Robinet et al 2008;Watkinson et al 2008 Fig. 2 Validation of microarray analysis by semiquantitative RT-PCR.…”

“…Adaptive genes are potentially more appealing for containing yield penalty under water stress and for successful development of drought-tolerant varieties (Blum 2005). This question was recently addressed for potato crop by comparing the molecular response to long-term water limiting conditions of adapted Andean potato genotypes, leading to the identification of some potential candidate adaptive genes (Schafleitner et al 2007;Vasquez-Robinet et al 2008;Watkinson et al 2008). Ideally, comparative transcription profiling of the response to shock or gradual water stress conditions might also provide complementary information, since it is presumable that shock conditions induce likely genes in the sensing, signalling and immediate response, while genes regulated by a gradual water stress imposition are more related to a long-term adaptive response.…”

“…Antioxidant defense of metallothioneins is activated at both adaptation and acclimation stages while genes involved in the flavonoid pathway are induced in drought adaptation since they show an induced basal level of expression in droughtadapted accession. Since the tuber development differed between three accessions of potato exposed to drought stress, a follow-up transcriptomic study was carried out to correlate the expression of genes associated with carbon metabolism with the tuber development phenotypes under drought (Watkinson et al, 2008). Adapted accession VTSA01 showed starch deficiency while intermediate accession VTSA02 showed normal starch deposition due to the alterations of expression of genes involved in sucrose and starch metabolism, such as sucrose synthase, starch phosphorylase, and glycogen bound starch synthase, as well as genes associated with trehalose and respiration metabolisms.…”

“…These proteins that are concentrated in the chloroplast and the cytosol protect photosynthetic apparatus by non-enzymatic ROS-scavenging process (Lemaire et al 2007). These thioredoxin genes are known to be light-dependent regulators of carbon metabolizing enzymes including that of Calvin cycle, especially starch biosynthesis and maintenance of sink strength under waterlimiting conditions (Watkinson et al 2008).…”
