Symbioses between metazoans and microbes involved in sulfur cycling are integral to the ability of animals to thrive within deep-sea hydrothermal vent environments; the development of such interactions is regarded as a key adaptation in enabling animals to successfully colonize vents. Microbes often colonize the surfaces of vent animals and, remarkably, these associations can also be observed intricately preserved by pyrite in the fossil record of vent environments, stretching back to the lower Paleozoic (Ordovician-early Silurian). In non-vent environments, sulfur isotopes are often employed to investigate the metabolic strategies of both modern and fossil organisms, as certain metabolic pathways of microbes, notably sulfate reduction, can produce large sulfur isotope fractionations. Authigenesis at the Urals Massive Sulfide Deposits: Insight from Pyrite Nodules Hosted in Ore Diagenites

The pyrite nodules from ore diagenites of the Urals massive sulfide deposits associated with various background sedimentary rocks are studied using optical and electron microscopy and LA-ICP-MS analysis. The nodules are found in sulfide–black shale, sulfide–carbonate–hyaloclastite, and sulfide–serpentinite diagenites of the Saf’yanovskoe, Talgan, and Dergamysh deposits, respectively. The nodules consist of the core made up of early diagenetic fine-crystalline (grained) pyrite and the rim (±intermediate zone) composed of late diagenetic coarse-crystalline pyrite. The nodules are replaced by authigenic sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, and fahlores (Saf’yanovskoe), sphalerite, chalcopyrite and galena (Talgan), and pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite (Dergamysh). They exhibit specific accessory mineral assemblages with dominant galena and fahlores, various tellurides and Co–Ni sulfoarsenides in sulfide-black shale, sulfide–hyaloclastite–carbonate, and sulfide-serpentinite diagenites, respectively. The core of nodules is enriched in trace elements in contrast to the rim. The nodules from sulfide–black shale diagenites are enriched in most trace elements due to their effective sorption by associated organic-rich sediments. The nodules from sulfide–carbonate–hyaloclastite diagenites are rich in elements sourced from seawater, hyaloclastites and copper–zinc ore clasts. The nodules from sulfide–serpentinite diagenites are rich in Co and Ni, which are typical trace elements of ultramafic rocks and primary ores from the deposit.

Pyrite nodules were found in thin-layered sulfide ores localized at the flanks of the Talgan Cu‒Zn massive sulfide deposit (South Urals). The nodules consist of (1) an inner core of microgranular pyrite with inclusions of authigenic sulfides and host rock minerals, (2) an intermediate zone of anhedral and subhedral pyrite metacrystals, (3) an outer zone formed by parallel subhedral pyrite crystals and (4) dioctahedral chlorite rimming the pyrite crystals of zone 3. Each zone exhibits specific trace element association, which is identified using LA ICP-MS micromapping. The trace element content of pyrite significantly (by 13 orders of magnitude) decreases in a range of microgranular pyrite of the core an- and subhedral pyrite crystals of the intermediate zone subhedral pyrite crystals of the outer zone (average values, ppm): 131069 Zn, 241001783 Pb, 1323134 As, 10271.81 Co, 4564 Ni, 39038 Ag, 0.10.01 Au, 550.6 Te, 9.80.6 Bi. The subhedral pyrite crystals of the outer zone are enriched (ppm, up to) in Cu (8367), Sb (1627) and Mn (734) relative to microgranular pyrite of the core. The extremely high trace element contents are related to the inclusions of authigenic chalcopyrite, sphalerite, fahlore, gold and silver minerals. The host rock components of the nodules include quartz, calcite, chlorite, illite and REE minerals. The ore clasts of distal sulfide turbidites mixed with hyaloclastites, which were altered during dia- and anadiagenesis, were the source of ore material for the nodules.
