Trypanosoma cruzi-infected Panstrongylus geniculatus and Rhodnius robustus adults invade households in the Tropics of Cochabamba region of Bolivia

Abstract: BackgroundThere are hardly any data available on the relationships between the parasite and the vector or regarding potential reservoirs involved in the natural transmission cycle of Trypanosoma cruzi in the Tropics of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Local families from communities were responsible for the capture of triatomine specimens, following a strategic methodology based on entomological surveillance with community participation developed by the National Chagas Programme of the Ministry of Health of Bolivia.Findin… Show more

“…longipennis in Jalisco state [ 34 ]. (ii) In the genus Panstrongylus , besides TcI, the dominant DTU (96.7%), TcII was identified in Brazil, TcIII in sylvatic cycles in three countries (Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela) and in domestic cycles in Bolivia [ 46 ], and TcIV [ 47 ] and TcV or TcVI were identified once in Venezuela and Brazil respectively [ 13 , 47 ]. The hybrid strains (TcV or TcVI) were identified in P .…”

“…A similar study was conducted in Cochabamba, Bolivia, a region near the state of Acre, Brazil, where 21 triatomines from the species Panstrongylus geniculatus Latreille, 1811 and Rhodnius robustus Larrousse, 1927 were captured, 63% of which were infected by T. cruzi 11 . This percentage of infection is higher than that found in this study, showing the potential of these species as vectors for Chagas disease.…”

“…(157) The Trinidadian rate is 42.5%, (80) the Colombian rates are 50%, (40) 70.6% (93) and 58.3%, (118) the Venezuelan rates are 20% (138) and 76.1%, (128) the Peruvian rate is 50%, (120) and the Bolivian rate is 62.5%. (51) Currently, seven DTUs, TcI to TcVI and T.c.bat, are known to circulate in the vectors in different proportions. (158,159) The T. cruzi DTUs in P. geniculatus correspond to six of the seven described DTUs (TcI, TcII, TcIII, TcIV, TcV and TcVI), the geographic distributions of which in America for P. geniculatus are shown in Fig.…”
