Trustworthy Global Computing

Abstract: Fault diagnosis is becoming increasingly important and difficult with the growing pervasiveness and complexity of computer systems. We propose in this paper a general semantic framework for fault ascription, a precise form of fault diagnosis that relies on counterfactual analysis for identifying necessary and sufficient causes of faults in component-based systems. Our framework relies on configuration structures to handle concurrent systems, partial and distributed observations in a uniform way. It defines bas… Show more

“…This is achieved by applying a series of tools in the mCRL2 toolbox, in a "pipe-and-filter" fashion. The sequence of steps can be summarised as follows: mcrl22lps lps2lts ltsconvert spec.mcrl2 spec.lps ~ spec.lts specjsm ( 16) The first step translates the mCRL2 specification to a linear process specification in the .lps format. The next step generates an LTS from a linear process.…”

“…Compositional verification of causality, has been :recently addressed in the literature of causality [13,14,15,16,17,6]. We later show by means of a short, but illustrative example, that the notion of causality introduced in this paper is not compositional with respect to the CCS-like parallel composition of LTSs [18].…”

“…The intuition behind the notion of cause suggests that action a should be considered a cause for h . According to Definition 4, we have that (s 10 Example 3 (Causality of Occurrence). Consider the LTS T 3 depicted in Figure 1.(c) and the same formula φ = h .…”

“…Our approach is based on our earlier work on decompositional verification of modal mu-calculus formulae [1]. Regarding compositional verification of causality, we are only aware of the line of work by Gößler, Le Métayer, and associates such as [9,7,8,10]. In the remainder, we review [9] and [8] as two closely related examples in this line of work.…”

“…In a similar spirit, [23] proposes a methodology for computing shortest counterexamples for symbolic model checking of so-called LTL with past formulae. Other "nice to have" properties of causality such as, compositionality, for instance, were addressed in [10,9,11,12,5].…”
