Trust Strategies and Policies in Complex Socio-technical Safety-Critical Domains: An Analysis of the Air Traffic Management Domain

Abstract: Abstract. The future development of Air Traffic Management (ATM), set by the ATM 2000+ Strategy, involves a structural revision of ATM processes, a new ATM concept and a system approach for the ATM network. This requires ATM services to go through significant structural, operational and cultural changes that will contribute towards the ATM 2000+ Strategy. Moreover, from a technology viewpoint, future ATM services will employ new systems forming the emergent ATM architecture underlying and supporting the Europe… Show more

“…However, proposed enhancements based on dynamically adjusting airspace sector boundaries will pose challenges to ATCOs' ability to build and/or maintain situation awareness (SA; Hauland, 2008;Nicholls et al, 2007) and will undoubtedly change workload levels (Kaber, Perry, Segall, & Sheik-Nainar, 2007;Loft, Sanderson, Neal, & Mooij, 2007;Miller & Parasuraman, 2007;Ruigrok & Hoekstra, 2007;Sharples et al, 2007;Willems & Koros, 2007). Futhermore, automation-related issues of trust, complacency (Felici, 2007;Gordon, Kirwan, & Perrin, 2007;Sharples et al, 2007;Subotic, Ochieng, & Straeter, 2007), and overreliance will become increasingly important because of the escalating commitment to automation in future ATM systems. Finally, as the ATCO's role changes from active ("hands-on") controller to relatively passive monitor, human factors (HF) issues, such as boredom, vigilance, monotony, motivation (Hitchcock et al, 2003;Stedmon et al, 2007;Straussberger & Schaefer, 2007), and stress, will become progressively critical.…”

“…Значительное число исследований было проведено с целью изучения взаимосвязи эффективности и безопасности авиационных полетов с доверием технике (Hopkin, 1995;Chabrol et al, 1999;Felici, 2007, EATMP, 2003a, 2003b, 2003c; и др.). Полученные в них результаты указывают на важное значение доверия пилотов бортовым и аэродромным техническим системам в обеспечении безопасности полета, а также в принятии адекватных решений в нестандартных ситуациях.…”
