In domains such as telehealth, intelligent transportation, and autonomous agriculture, ensuring secure routing of collected and exchanged data is paramount. Since its inception, there have been many research challenges for the RLP routing protocol that operates in resource-constrained environments and utilizes battery-powered IoT devices. Hence, researchers have focused on this crucial challenge by advising solutions to mitigate attacks that deplete nodes' energy and hence create energy gaps in the network. In this article, we study the impact of two energy exhaustion attacks (hello flooding and version number modification) on the RPL protocol and we present a novel mitigation solution based on behavioural trust. We present an in-depth study of the impact on radio energy consumption of the hello flooding and version number modification attacks in RPL as the number of network nodes increases. We showed that the impact of the former is localized to nodes in the vicinity of the attacker while the latter has a global impact that extends to the entire network. The obtained results from our simulations show that version number modification attack in particular has devastating impact on the network. We also propose a trust-based solution to mitigate these attacks and demonstrate its effectiveness. Accordingly, we conduct comparative study of these attacks and empirically investigate their impact on network performance by running extensive evaluation experiments. Our findings verify the effectiveness of our proposed trust system in mitigating both attacks.

Routing and security are the two main prerequisites for ensuring the correct operation of wireless networks. The importance of these cases doubles in wide networks such as IoT. This paper presents an algorithm to improve Secure Routing in IoT called SRAIOT. This algorithm uses a hierarchical structure to determine the connections between network components and data transfer routing. In SRAIOT, the network structure is managed hierarchically and through SDN. For this purpose, the IoT network is first divided into a set of subnets using the SDN solution, communication control and authentication are managed using the controller nodes of each subnet. The communication between two objects (located in different subnets) will be possible if their identity is confirmed through the controller nodes related to them. On the other hand, in order to identify the sources of attacks and network security threats, the controller nodes in each subnet monitor the network traffic pattern using an ensemble learning model and identify possible attacks in their subnet. The performance of SRAIOT was tested in the simulation, and the results were compared with previous methods. The results of these tests show that SRAIOT improves network performance regarding routing and detecting attacks.

Compound Metric Assisted Trust Aware Routing for Internet of Things through Firefly Algorithm

Security and privacy are the major concerns in the internet of things (IoT) which are uncertain and unpredictable. Trust aware routing is one of the recent and effective strategies which ensure better resilience for IoT nodes from different security threats. Towards such concern, this paper proposes a new strategy called independent onlooker withstanding trust aware routing (IOWTAR) for IoT. IOWTAR introduced a new compound trust metric by combining three individual metrics namely independent trust, onlooker trust, and withstanding trust (a combination of resilient trust and immovability trust). Independent trust and onlooker trust are assessed based on direct and indirect experiences of nodes about their neighbor nodes. Withstanding trust is assessed based on the stability and resilience of nodes towards dynamic topological changes and network failures respectively. Further, this work adapted the Firefly algorithm (FFA) to optimize the weights of individual trusts and establishes a secure path. Simulation experiments carried out over the proposed method had shown its superiority in terms of packet delivery ratio, delay, and throughput. The proposed method has gained an average improvement in the throughput is of 23.71%, 20.18%, 17.27%, and 2.88% from PSO, GSA, WOA, and CBBMOR-TSM-IOT methods respectively.
