Trust and temporality in participatory research

Abstract: This paper argues that trust cannot be taken for granted in long-term participatory research and promotes greater consideration to conceptualizing the trusting process as fluid and fragile. This awareness by researchers can reveal to them how the passing of time shapes and reshapes the nature of trusting relationships and their constant negotiation and re-negotiation. The paper draws together literature from different disciplines on the themes of trust, temporality and participatory research and outcomes from … Show more

“…While the initial decision to maintain anonymity was motivated by the desire to foster psychological safety, recent research suggests that anonymity impedes active contribution and shared ownership in participatory research (Godfrey-Faussett, 2022). In addition, psychological safety can be achieved by creating a cohesive bond based on strong interpersonal relationships and can help maintain trust and collective action (Armstrong et al, 2022;Christens & Speer, 2015). The mismatch between the research team's intention and the perception of the Community Advisory Board members highlights the importance of collecting feedback on the participatory research process itself, which is an important tool to foster reflexivity and encourage a constant reevaluation of known and unknown assumptions (Olmos-Vega et al, 2022).…”

“…Stemming in part from structural inequities in grantmaking, of particular relevance to this article are the limited time and resources available for academic and community entities to engage in the critical stage of equitable partnership development, and lack of knowledge and skills in how to effectively conduct research in diverse partnerships [13][14][15][16] . There are few co-learning opportunities to establish partnerships prior to applying for a research grant, and most calls for proposals have a short turn-around, hindering partnership development.…”

“…It takes time and co-learning to develop trusting and inclusive CBPR partnerships, particularly among those who have not previously worked together across race/ethnicity and other social positions, as in many predominantly White research/academic institutions working with community partners and communities of color [12,13,16]. Securing research funding for new CBPR partnerships is challenging as there is rarely compensation for the time and energy needed to establish relationships, particularly for junior faculty and community partners.…”
