Truncus arteriosus with double aortic arch: A rare association

Abstract: Truncus arteriosus (TA) is a congenital heart defect often diagnosed in neonatal period; it represents 0.7% of all congenital heart lesions. The pulmonary arteries originate generally above the coronary ostium. Aorto-pulmonary and interventricular defects are believed to represent an abnormality of conotruncal septation. TA is classified into four types, according to Van Praagh and Colette Edwards. Some of congenital heart defects may be associated with TA, such as aortic interruption. In literature, TA with a… Show more

“…Double aortic arch appears when the involution of the right fourth arch fails to occur. DAA usually occurs as an isolated lesion, it may be associated with congenital heart diseases such as tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), ventricular septal defect, and transposition of great arteries [23]. DAA can be divided into two types depending upon the patency of two arches.…”

“…The truncal vessel carries blood from both ventricles. 2 The pulmonary arteries branch from this vessel, which is located generally above the coronary ostium. Aortopulmonary and interventricular defects are thought to be caused by the conotruncal septal defect.…”

“…As a result, the ductus arteriosus is either absent or diminished in patients with a normal calibre aortic arch. 2 We present a rare case of the common arterial trunk with coarctation of the aorta and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Because of the patient’s poor clinical status, palliation with bilateral pulmonary artery branch banding and Prostaglandin E1 infusion was required.…”

“…Common arterial trunk (CAT) is a rare congenital malformation characterized by a single arterial trunk arising from the heart, overriding the interventricular septum and gives rise to the systemic, pulmonary, and coronary circulations 1 . The incidence of defect is 6-10/100,000 live births, it is occasionally associated with aortic arch anomaly such as right aortic arch and aortic arch interruption 1,2 . Double aortic arch (DAA) is the most common vascular ring, and results from persistence of both 4 th arches, compressing the trachea or esophagus or both 2 .…”
