Objective. Evaluate the effect of increasing P intake on nutrient digestibility, and compare the true and apparent absorption coefficients of P and Ca in lambs. Materials and methods. Twenty-four Santa Ines sheep, with an average weight of 33.6 ± 1.6 kg, were distributed into four treatments (0, 2, 4 and 6 g/day of supplementary P) with forage: concentrate ratio of 70:30. The study of apparent nutrient digestibility was conducted during the first week, using the total feces collection method. During the second week, after injection of 7.4 MBq of 32 P and 7.7 MBq of 45 Ca, apparent (AAC) and true (TAC) absorption coefficients of P and Ca were determined. The lambs were kept in metabolic cages. Results. The increase in P intake did not affect (p>0.05) dry matter, crude protein, NDF or ADF digestibility, but the TAC of P and Ca and mineral matter digestibility decreased. The AAC was not affected (p=0.10). A cubic relationship was observed between P intake and TAC (TAC=2.16-1.95X+0.55X 2 -0.04X 3 ; R 2 =0.38) and linear relationship with the TAC of Ca (TAC=0.559-0.03X; R 2 =0.26). TAC and AAC values were different (p<0.001). Conclusions. The increase in P intake doesn't impact organic matter digestibility, but does affect P and Ca absorption. Apparent digestibility is not a reliable parameter to determine the efficiency of P and Ca absorption.

SUMMARYThe objective of the current study was to evaluate the utilization of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) in growing sheep consuming increasing amounts of dicalcium phosphate. Eighteen growing sheep, aged 8 months, were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 12·5 and 25 g of dicalcium phosphate/day. During the experiment, animals were injected intravenously with 7·4 MBq of 45 Ca and 32 P and samples of plasma, faeces and urine were subsequently taken daily for 1 week after injection. Rumen fluid was sampled on days 4-7 after injection. Specific radioactivity in plasma and in faeces were used to determine true absorption of Ca and P, whereas plasmatic and ruminal specific radio-activities were used to determine endogenous P flow into the rumen and turnover time of rumen P. Increasing dicalcium phosphate intake led to linear increases in faecal excretion of endogenous Ca and P (P < 0·05), suggesting that surpluses of ingested Ca and P were voided through secretion to the gut. True absorption coefficients for 0, 12·5 and 25 g of dicalcium phosphate ingested daily were 0·54, 0·41 and 0·38 for Ca, and 0·66, 0·62 and 0·64 for P, respectively. Flows of endogenous P into the rumen increased linearly and ruminal turnover time of P decreased linearly (P < 0·01) as P intake was increased. Concentrations of Ca and P in bone were not affected by the increased amounts of these minerals ingested (P < 0·05). In conclusion, increasing ingestion of dicalcium phosphate increases faecal excretion of Ca and P, thus decreasing the efficiency of utilization of both minerals. Moreover, increasing levels of dietary P increased endogenous P excretion, contributing to the amount of P disposed of in the environment.

RESUMO:Realizou-se com essa revisão descrever o metabolismo de cálcio e fósforo em ovinos assim como discutir os fatores inerentes a absorção desses minerais. A importância desse estudo se deve ao aumento crescente das necessidades desses minerais na dieta devido ao melhoramento genético dos animais, à reprodução de animais jovens, às deficiências de fósforo, a crescente incidência de partos duplos, ao aumento do uso de dietas com alta densidade energética e à incidência de hipocalcemia recorrente no rebanho ovino nacional. A taxa de absorção de cálcio a partir do intestino aumenta de forma constante durante toda a gestação, entretanto é insuficiente para atender aos requisitos da ovelha no final da gestação e início de lactação. Pesquisas relacionadas ao aproveitamento de P por ruminantes bem como as fontes dietéticas desse elemento ainda devem ser elaboradas devido ao elevado custo desse mineral na mistura mineral.Palavras-chave: Absorção. The importance of this study is due to the increasing needs of these minerals in the diet due to the breeding of animals for breeding young animals, the phosphorus deficiencies, the increasing incidence of twin births, the increased use of diets with high energy density and the incidence of recurrent hypocalcaemia in the national sheep flock. Calcium absorption rate from the intestine increases steadily throughout pregnancy, however is insufficient to meet the requirements of the ewe in late pregnancy and early lactation. Research related to the use of P by ruminants, and dietary sources of this element must still be developed due to the high cost of this mineral in the mineral mixture.Keywords: Absorption. Lamb.
