Troponin-I is not falsely elevated in asymptomatic dialysis patients

Abstract: Dialysis patients with troponin-I levels above the cut-off value diagnostic for acute myocardial event (AME) are sometimes labeled as having "renal cause" of elevated troponin-I. Patients with troponin-I levels above 0.0 ng/mL, but below the cut-off level for an AME, are reported to have increased risk for coronary heart disease and mortality. Single pre-dialysis blood samples were taken from 150 asymptomatic dialysis patients (on hemo- or peritoneal dialysis) for troponin-I, cardiac enzymes, C-reactive protei… Show more

“…[23] Allen et al [9] suggested prudent application of troponin testing in SVT patients due to low cardiovascular risk. However, given the higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease in ESKD patients than the general population, [24] most of the patients with ESKD (91.9%) were tested for cTnI level when presenting SVT in the ED of our institution, resulting in a markedly prolonged length of hospital stay. In the current study, more previous medical histories were present in the cTnI-positive group compared with the cTnI-negative group.…”
