Tropical spastic paraparesis in colombia

Abstract: A high-incidence focus of tropical spastic paraparesis (TSP) occurs on the South Pacific coast of Colombia. Of 55 patients studied, 52 (94.5%) had IgG antibodies to the human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) in serum and/or cerebrospinal fluid. Control groups did not show similar high positivity. Our results suggest that HTLV-I or other antigenically related retroviruses may be the cause of TSP in Colombia. Similar clinical, laboratory, and epidemiological findings have been reported in widely remote … Show more

“…It is worthy to note the similarity in the numbers of anti-HTLV-I positive and negative patients with PSP in most of the regions. In contrast to previous reports (9,10,(12)(13)(14), our cases were mostly Caucasian/Indian, with a few patients of pure Indian ancestry (Huilliche or Mapuche). The pre valence of antibodies against HTLV-I in family members of the seropositive patients is clearly higher (18.9%) than in the general population (0.73% in blood donors) (15).…”

“…If this concept is correct TSP should begin to appear in UK-bom subjects, provided viral transmission occurs in this temperate area, but it may take decades to become apparent given the inefficiency of acquisition. Host factors may also be important in determining whether a patient of Afro-Caribbean origin develops MS or a white European presents with TSP but data presented here, and those of Dean, [1][2][3][4][5][6] suggest that, as far as MS is concerned, environmental factors predominate over ethnic ones.…”

“…El HTLV-I fue detectado en Colombia en 1981 por Zaninovic, et al, en una serie de pacientes provenientes de algunas poblaciones de la costa Pacífica que padecían de paraparesia espástica (8). El mismo grupo documentó sistemáticamente los reportes de caso y la prevalencia de la infección en otras regiones y grupos poblacionales del país, especialmente comunidades indígenas (9,10).…”
