Trophodynamics of Southern Ocean pteropods on the southern Kerguelen Plateau

Abstract: Pteropods are a group of small marine gastropods that are highly sensitive to multiple stressors associated with climate change. Their trophic ecology is not well studied, with most research having focused primarily on the effects of ocean acidification on their fragile, aragonite shells. Stable isotopes analysis coupled with isotope‐based Bayesian niche metrics is useful for characterizing the trophic structure of biological assemblages. These approaches have not been implemented for pteropod assemblages. We … Show more

“…According to Burridge et al (2017b), the presence of gymnosomes (and thecosomes) in their sampling material came from (sub)tropical free waters within a longitude gradient of ∼28°N and ∼28°S (Atlantic Ocean), and were most abundant in sub-Antarctic waters and rather less in warmer waters (e.g. Weldrick et al 2019). Burridge et al (2017b) did not assign any species level.…”

“…They are considered consistent and ocassionally dominant components of zooplankton communities, collectively contributing to between 5 and 63% of zooplankton abundance in some locations. There are also important food web dynamics among pteropods communities as gymnosomes are preferential predators on the predominantly herbivorous thecosomes (Weldrick et al, 2019).…”
