“…However, recent data from a salt marsh gully in the Scheldt estuary, the Netherlands, confirm our results that sulfide-oxidizing bacteria are the major carbon resource for these copepods (Cnudde et al, 2014). Further, Grego et al (2014) found representatives of the family Cletodidae to be the most resistant copepods to longterm anoxia.…”

“…Bacteria are a possible food source for harpacticoid copepods (Rieper, 1978). In our study, the presence of 14:0, 15:0 and 17:0, and 18:1ω7 could indicate a contribution of bacterial biomass to copepod diet (Cnudde et al, 2015;Jaschinski et al, 2008). Other heterotrophs (fungi, protists) are also potentially ingested by copepods, but our approach cannot determinate this potential contribution to the copepod diet.…”

“…Fatty acid (FA) profiling complements stable isotope analysis as a second biomarker, providing additional information on the feeding ecology of meiofauna (Cnudde et al, 2015;De Troch et al, 2012;Leduc et al, 2009), as several FAs can be used as markers for specific food sources (Dalsgaard et al, 2003;El-Sabaawi et al, 2009).…”

“…longicaudata, we also sampled the Paulina inter-tidal mudflat in the polyhaline reach of the Scheldt Estuary, The Netherlands, in July 2014. Details on the Paulina tidal flat are given in Gallucci, Steyaert, and Moens (2005); the sampling station corresponded to station H4 in Cnudde et al (2015).…”
