Trophic evolution of Lake Lugano related to external load reduction: Changes in phosphorus and nitrogen as well as oxygen balance and biological parameters

Abstract: Lake Lugano is located at the border between Italy and Switzerland and is divided into three basins by two narrowings. The geomorphologic characteristics of these basins are very different. The catchment area is characterized by calcareous rock, gneiss and porphyry; the population amounts to approximately 290 000 equivalent inhabitants. The external nutrient load derives from anthropogenic (85%), industrial (10%) and agricultural (5%) sources. The limnological studies carried out by Baldi et al. (1949) and EAW… Show more

“…Blue green algae reduction was also registered in systems with nutritional depletion as showed by Cronberg (1999) and Barbieri & Simona (2001). Annadotter et al (1999) pointed out, after restoration of Finjasjön Lake (Sweden), a reduction in the total biomass and phytoplankton floristic composition.…”

“…Other works not using mesocosms were carried out to describe the successional changes in the phytoplankton community after recovery and the nutrient concentration reduction during the restoration process of eutrophicated systems (e.g. Rip et al 1992, Perrow et al 1994, Padisák & Reynolds 1998, Cronberg 1999, Barbieri & Simona 2001.…”

“…MeroLakeMab was developed for conditions in the northern basin of Lake Lugano as described by Barbieri and Simona (2001) and for conditions in Lake Bourget [2004][2005][2006][2007] described in the present study. Additional data for Lake Bourget were collected during the calibration process in 2008.…”

“…Basic data about the two lakes used for model development and testing are given in Table 1. TP loading, TP concentrations and water budget data for Lake Lugano were taken from Barbieri and Simona (2001). The total tributary TP loading and water inflow (Q)…”
