“…14 The CNTF doses used in our EAE experiments are in same range as other studies in which CNTF or LIF were administered systemically. 26,41,75,76 However, we observed severe weight loss in mice treated with 1.2 mg/ kg/day CNTF, to the extent that some mice had to be sacrificed because of ethical reasons. CNTF is known for its capability to induce weight loss and is currently under investigation as a potential treatment in obesity.…”

“…CNTF also enhanced the survival of sensory, hippocampal, and cerebellar neurons (26 -28) and increased survival of retinal photoreceptors in animal models of retinal degeneration (29 -31). On denervated rat skeletal muscles, CNTF reduced denervation-induced atrophy and increased muscular strength (32,33).…”

“…Neurotrophic factors have been shown to prevent atrophy of denervated skeletal muscle. [29][30][31] There is no similar direct evidence for the role of neurotrophic factors in denervated EOMs, but restoration and even increase in the cross-sectional area of fibers in reinnervatated EOMs may be an indirect evidence for the neurotrophic effect of reinnervation on EOMs. 24 This evidence might explain our finding of preservation of EOM volume in cases of acquired oculomotor palsy with aberrant regeneration.…”
