Trophic ecology of the Endangered Darwin’s frog inferred by stable isotopes

Abstract: Darwin's frogs Rhinoderma spp. are the only known mouth-brooding frogs on Earth. The southern Darwin's frog, R. darwinii, is found in the temperate forests of southern South America, is listed as Endangered and could be the only extant representative of this genus. Based on stomach contents, invertebrate prey availability and stable isotope analysis, we determined for the first time trophic ecological parameters for this species. Our results showed that R. darwinii is a generalist sit-and-wait predator and a s… Show more

“…There are plans to reintroduce R. darwinii individuals from captive breeding projects to areas from which they have been extirpated, or to use them for population reinforcement. Translocation success will depend on evidence-based management of the threats that led to the extirpations or declines at the release sites (IUCN, 2013; Molina-Burgos et al, 2018).…”

“…For example, Molina‐Burgos et al. (2018) used Bayesian statistics to estimate that the endangered Darwin’s frog ( Rhinoderma darwinii ) occupied a trophic position of 2.9 (secondary consumer). If this estimate differed by just a few tenths of a trophic level and the trophic position was 2.6 instead of 2.9, it would imply that Darwin’s frogs relied on higher amounts of plant material, which might influence conservation strategies for this species.…”

“…Anderson et al (1999) concluded that the main functions of plant ingestion in anurans include facilitating insect exoskeleton digestion and parasite elimination and providing water to prevent dehydration. We suggest further behavioral studies to understand how Physalaemus species feed on termites and ants in the leaf litter and determine if ingestion of leaves is intencional or accidental, and analysis of stable isotopes (e.g., Molina-Burgos et al, 2018) would help determine if ingested plant material is assimilated.…”
