Tropane alkaloids from Erythroxylum emarginatum

Abstract: A tropane alkaloid, anhydroecgonine methyl ester N-oxide (2), was isolated for the first time as a naturally occurring compound, with anhydroecgonine methyl ester (1) from the bark of Erythroxylum emarginatum. Compound 1 was also isolated from the twigs. Their structures were elucidated mainly by spectroscopic methods.

“…highlighted the presence of terpenoids, 5,6 flavonoids, 5,7 and alkaloids. 8 Some of the isolated compounds from this genus exhibit pharmacological activities, such as antifungal, 6,7 antioxidant, 3,8 antileishmanial, 9 cytotoxic, 5,10 anti-inflammatory, 5,11 antinociceptive, 5,11 acaricidal, 12 and insecticidal activities. 6,13 The relevant literature indicates 160 known species of this genus, 14 and, approximately 20% (~30 species) have had previous chemical/pharmacological studies carried out, which reinforces the importance of new studies regarding the species of Xylopia.…”

“…The leaves of Olokuto, a wild Erythroxylum species known as Erythroxylum dekindtii, are used to reduce fever in Angola. In addition, the roots and leaves of E. emarginatum are used for pain relief, to increase alertness and also as an aphrodisiac (Nishiyama et al, 2007). It is also very common for tropane alkaloid-producing plants to be used as a panacea.…”
