Trocar Site Hernia After Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Abstract: The development of a postoperative trocar site hernia may be prevented by the closure of 10-mm trocar sites in patients who are older than 60 years, obese, and who have a longer duration of operation.

“…Available data derived from univariate and multivariate analyses of cohort studies, which have investigated the effect of potential risk factors for trocar-site hernia. Obesity, age above 60 years diabetes, long duration of surgery, and the need for fascia enlargement for specimen extraction were identified as risk factors for the development of trocar-site hernia [120,137].…”

“…Interestingly, we did not find an association between BMI and complication rate. Patient's age [32,33] and co-morbidities [34][35][36][37] are recognized risk factors for port-site complications. The findings of present study endorsed them as potential risk factors for port-site complications.…”

“…The findings of present study endorsed them as potential risk factors for port-site complications. Studies have also mentioned obesity [33,38] as a potential risk factor. However, in present study, we did not have any obese patient and hence are not in a position to comment on this aspect.…”
