Triplet Pathways in Diarylethene Photochromism: Photophysical and Computational Study of Dyads Containing Ruthenium(II) Polypyridine and 1,2-Bis(2-methylbenzothiophene-3-yl)maleimide Units

Abstract: A 1,2-bis(2-methylbenzothiophene-3-yl)maleimide model ( DAE) and two dyads in which this photochromic unit is coupled, via a direct nitrogen-carbon bond ( Ru-DAE) or through an intervening methylene group ( Ru-CH 2-DAE ), to a ruthenium polypyridine chromophore have been synthesized. The photochemistry and photophysics of these systems have been thoroughly characterized in acetonitrile by a combination of stationary and time-resolved (nano- and femtosecond) spectroscopic methods. The diarylethene model DAE und… Show more

“…[12] This process is not trivial, since it can also lead to aperturbation of the excited state properties of the switching unit. [13] Nevertheless,t his approach was successfully used for the visible-light-induced photoisomerization of azobenzenes, [14] diarylethenes, [15] spiropyrans, [16] ar hodopsin-based switch, [17] and ar otaxane-derived linear motor. [18] Overcrowded alkene-based molecular motors, [19] developed in our research group,a re unique among photoresponsive systems in the sense that their thermal isomerization follows ahelix inversion pathway, that is,the upper and lower halves of the molecule flip relative to each other (Scheme 1).…”

“…For the photochromic bis(2-methylbenzothien-3-yl)maleimide-coupled phenanthroline ligands (L5 and L6) reported by Scandola and coworkers [31], their photochromism could also be sensitized by the 3 MLCT excited state in their ruthenium(II) complexes, [Ru(bpy) 2 (L5)] 2+ and [Ru(bpy) 2 (L6)] 2+ (Figure 2.11a). The singlet and triplet photochromic cyclization pathway of the free ligands and the MLCT-sensitized photochromism in the complexes were investigated in detail by ultrafast spectroscopic and computational studies.…”

“…Other diarylethene-containing ligands, which connected the diarylethene moiety to various ligands through a spacer unit, have been designed to construct a supramolecular system linking the inorganic/organometallic photosensitizers with different types of diarylethenes [29][30][31][32][33][34][35][36]. For the photochromic bis(2-methylbenzothien-3-yl)maleimide-coupled phenanthroline ligands (L5 and L6) reported by Scandola and coworkers [31], their photochromism could also be sensitized by the 3 MLCT excited state in their ruthenium(II) complexes, [Ru(bpy) 2 (L5)] 2+ and [Ru(bpy) 2 (L6)] 2+ (Figure 2.11a).…”
