Triple Valvulopathy and Jaccoud’s Arthropathy: A Case Report and Literature Review

Abstract: Cardiac involvement is fairly common in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It may involve all layers of the heart and coronary arteries as well as the heart valves. We report an extremely rare presentation of valvulitis and valvular dysfunction associated with systemic lupus erythematosus. This is the first case of lupus valvulitis which required three mechanical prosthetic valve replacements with disease recurrence leading to a fatal outcome. This is, in our point of view, the consequence of ag… Show more

“…43 Additionally, there are reports of cardiac valvular abnormalities in other conditions such as SLE, in which Jaccoud arthropathy can also occur. 44,45 In the study by Santiago et al of 113 patients with SLE (25 patients, 22% with Jaccoud arthropathy), echocardiographic abnormalities affecting the valves were more frequently observed in 36% of patients with Jaccoud arthropathy compared with 9% of patients without Jaccoud arthropathy (P = 0.001). 45 The most common findings in the group with Jaccoud arthropathy were aortic regurgitation and mitral regurgitation.…”
