Triple-pulse LIBS: laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy signal enhancement by combination of pre-ablation and re-heating laser pulses

Abstract: The goal of this work is to examine the effect of a third additional laser pulse on orthogonal double-pulse laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (DP LIBS).

“…They maintained that further analysis of a Fraunhofer-type signal may contribute to more precise under-water quantitative LIBS measurements. The addition of a pre-ablation laser pulse and a reheating laser pulse to LIBS were investigated by Prochazka et al 116 The energies of the pre-ablation and reheating laser pulses were kept constant and the energy of the ablation pulse was set to the minimum value to detect analyte signals above the LOD. Once the delay times of the three laser pulses were optimised, an enhancement of signal:background ratios was observed in comparison to DP- and SP-LIBS.…”

“…In recent years, several approaches have been proposed to further improve the signal enhancement factors of reheating ODP-LIBS, such as combination with spatial confinement, [6] re-use laser pulse energy with reflective concentric cavity, [7] and combination pre-ablation with reheating ODP-LIBS using third laser pulse. [8] Sobral and Sánchez-Aké et al reported an interesting work, basically a cross beam DP-LIBS but with two orthogonal targets. In their works, signal intensities of the later produced sample plasma could be enhanced by pre-produced target plasma in a vacuum chamber.…”
