Triorthocresyl Phosphate Poisoning

Abstract: Since the end of the nineteenth century, numerous cases of triorthocresyl phosphate (TOCP) poisoning due to accidental contamination of drink, food or drugs have been reported. Following the ingestion of preparations contaminated by TOCP, gastrointestinal symptoms may occur and after an interval of ten to twenty days, a well-known delayed neurotoxicity gradually develops. In general, the initial symptoms are pain and paresthesia in the lower extremities. In most cases, muscle weakness progresses rapidly develo… Show more

“…The late appearance of lowerextremity spasticity consistent with pyramidal tract involvement is the only established CNS disorder associated with OP intoxication. 5,39 The proposed COPIND remains a poorly characterized collection of symptoms and signs that has been attributed to chronic low-level exposure to OP compounds at levels insufficient to produce cholinergic symptoms. 1,2 Cognitive impairments have been reported in association with low-dose exposure to OP compounds.…”

“…All three cases had severe neurologic abnormalities, but experienced extensive if not complete recovery. Inoue et al (1988) cited two additional cases in German chemical plants (1943,1946) but gave no details. Bidstrup and Bonnel (1954) …”

“…The hazards of TCP exposure were first recognized from cases of human intoxication (Zinn, 1968;Inoue et al, 1988). However, most of the toxicology of the aryl phosphates comes from the study of experimental animals, particularly the mature hen and cat (Smith et al, 1930a;Abou-Donia et al, 1986).…”
