A review of mainly the past two years is undertaken of the industrial applications of pulsed power. Repetitively operated pulsed power generators with a moderate peak power have been developed for industrial applications. These generators are reliable and have low maintenance. Development of the pulsed power generators helps promote industrial applications of pulsed power for such things as food processing, medical treatment, water treatment, exhaust gas treatment, ozone generation, engine ignition, ion implantation and others. Here, industrial applications of pulsed power are classified by application for biological effects, for pulsed streamer discharges in gases, for pulsed discharges in liquid or liquidmixture, and for material processing.Index Terms -Pulsed power, industrial application, bioelectrics, exhaust gas treatment, discharge in liquid, material processing.

Abstract-In the present paper, a solid-state pulse generator based on magnetic switch is investigated both numerically and experimentally. The generator have potential advantage of high repetitive rate achievability and long life time reliability, which is proper to be used for food treatments by pulsed electric field (PEF). Specially, the pulse generator is designed and the total weight and volume is expected to be 90kg and 0.20m 3 , approximately. Circuit of the generator is simulated using the P-Spice software. Influence of the impedance of a dummy load is analyzed. The peak voltage over 20kV and pulse duration of 1μs-2.5μs can be achieved on the dummy load. The expected maximum frequency is up to 1kHz. As important parameters, characteristics of the cores used for establishing the magnetic switch were measured at the actual working frequency. Additionally, the magnetic switch with winding number of 30turns and volume of 6000cm 3 was tested on an equivalent experimental platform. Typical current with peak amplitude over 520A, duration of 1.52μs was obtained with dummy load of 45Ω. Importantly, the short-circuit termination was also tested for possible flashover in the treatment chamber. Experimental results show reasonable agreement with the numerical analysis.Keywords-solid-state pulse power technology, magnetic switch, pulsed electric field (PEF), food treatments.

The influence of the electric field distribution between the electrodes and the seed electron generation rate on the scattering of the breakdown voltage of SF6-insulated spark gaps was investigated. The breakdown voltage scattering considerably can be reduced by applying large-gap-volume, uniform-field electrode profiles instead of spherical shaped electrodes. Moreover, uniform field electrode profiles exhibit an uniform discharge probability in the entire gap volume and following an almost uniform erosion of electrode material along the electrode's surface. This preserves electrode shape and switching performance of the spark gap for a long maintenance-free lifetime. Breakdown voltage scattering further can be reduced by increasing the seed electron generation in the gap by an auxiliary corona discharge adjacent to the main gap. The experimental observations are discussed on the basis of the volume time law for discharge initiation.
