Triflumuron Effects on the Physiology and Reproduction ofRhodnius prolixusAdult Females

Abstract: We evaluated the efficacy of the growth regulator triflumuron (TFM) in inducing mortality and disrupting both oviposition and egg hatching in Rhodnius prolixus adult females. TFM was administered via feeding, topically or by continuous contact with impregnated surfaces. Feeding resulted in mild biological effects compared with topical and impregnated surfaces. One day after treatment, the highest mortality levels were observed with topical surface and 30 days later both topical and impregnated surfaces induced… Show more

“…A decrease in the number of eggs laid with a reduction of viability of eggs on lufenuron and triflumuron treatment has been reported in Rhodnius prolixus. 29,52 Interestingly, we did not observe any reduction in oviposition or ultrastructural changes in ovarian tissue when 6-or 10-day-old adults were exposed to novaluron (Fig. S3).…”

“…A reduction in egg viability, however, was noted by exposure of 6‐ or 10‐day‐old adults to novaluron. Oral exposure to triflumuron has been shown to decrease chitin contents in mated and nonmated adults of R. prolixus 52 . A marked dose and age‐dependent decrease in incorporation of [ 3 H]‐GlcNAc in the ovaries of R. prolixus has also been shown 29 .…”

“… 44 used CRISPR/Cas9 technology to show that inhibition occurs through interaction with the CHSA enzyme. Effects of BFU on egg chitin synthesis and other chitinous structures have been demonstrated in other insects 45 , 46 . The simultaneous action of DFB upon the CHSA enzyme, proposed by Douris et al .…”

“…The resurgence of vector populations and some reports of insecticide resistance in triatomines make of special interest the study and development of new strategies for control of these vectors [20]. Henriques et al [21] studied in detail the action of the Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) Triflumuron (TFM) in Rhodnius prolixus , which is a model for triatomine biology. This work shows important effects of TFM on female fertility and gives some new insights in the mechanism of action of this insecticide, as impairments in diuresis and chitin turnover with reflections in insect immunity.…”
