Trichosporon japonicum sp. nov. isolated from the air

Abstract: A yeast strain isolated from the air in Japan was found to represent a new species, and was named Trichosporon japonicum. This species produced arthroconidia and appressoria. T. japonicum formed a cluster with the appressorium-forming species Trichosporon inkin and Trichosporon ovoides in a phylogenetic tree constructed using small-subunit rDNA sequences. However, they had low relatedness to each other in DNA-DNA hybridization experiments. T. japonicum is distinguished from both T. inkin and T. ovoides by its … Show more

“…and Torulaspora delbruecki (data not shown), which are all known to occur in food matrices like cheese, yoghurt, wine, maple sap and sugar melasse (Sheneman and Costilow, 1959;Caggia et al, 2001;Petersen et al, 2002;Samaraweera et al, 2003;Passoth et al, 2006). In addition, these species can also be found in the air (Sugita and Nakase, 1998;Sampaio et al, 2001;Yamamoto et al, 2002). In contrast to stored thick juice, no eukaryotes were found in freshly produced thick juice.…”

“…Several new taxa have recently been proposed for inclusion in the genus Middelhoven et al, 1999Middelhoven et al, , 2000Middelhoven et al, , 2001Sugita & Nakase, 1998;Sugita et al, 2002b). Trichosporon species are emerging opportunistic pathogens of immunocompromised patients, particularly those with granulocytopenia (Fleming et al, 2002;Walsh et al, 2004).…”

“…In the phylogenetic tree based on the 18S rDNA sequences, the cluster comprising B. formosensis, B. koratensis and B. lagerstroemiae is well-separated from other clusters in Trichosporonales and connected with Group II of Trichosporon (Sugita and Nakase, 1998) or the Ovoides clade (Scorzetti et al, 2002) though bootstrap confidence level is not high. Logically, it is reasonable to describe these two new species in the genus newly established because the type species of Bullera is not located in the Trichosporonales cluster.…”
