Trichofolliculoma

Abstract

SUMMARY Trichofolliculoma is a rare tumour occurring on the face. The characteristic “wool wisp” protruding from the tumour makes it clinically recognizable in most cases, and the typical histological picture confirms the diagnosis.

Trichofolliculoma of the external auditory meatus:

“…This nondescript gross appearance is typified by a variety of clinical diagnoses, ranging from a sebaceous cyst to a basal cell carcinoma (Gray and Helwig, 1962;Woringer, 1961). In the classical lesion a wisp of fine white hairs issues from the central crater (Pinkus and Sutton, 1965;Hunter and Donald, 1966;Sanderson, 1961). Surgical excision is all that is required in most cases, though in four cases quoted by Gray and Helwig (1962) the lesion did recur.…”

Multiple trichofolliculomas on unusual sites: a case report and review of the literature

“…According to Kligman and Pinkus, 1 it shows intermediate differentiation between a hair follicle nevus, which is simple hyperplasia of the hair follicle, and a trichoepithelioma, which usually lacks a mature hair follicle. It presents in adults as a papule or nodule, mostly on the face but occasionally on the scalp or neck 2,3 . Rarely, the external auditory meatus, 4 intranasal area, 5 genital area, 6 lip, 7 and vulva 8 are affected.…”
