We have derived elemental abundances for a sample of nine IRAS sources with colours similar to those of post-asymptotic giant branch (post-AGB) stars. For IRAS 01259+6823, IRAS 05208−2035, IRAS 04535+3747 and IRAS 08187−1905, this is the first detailed abundance analysis based upon high-resolution spectra. Mild indication of s-processing for IRAS 01259+6823, IRAS 05208−2035 and IRAS 08187−1905 has been found and a more comprehensive study of s-process-enhanced objects IRAS 17279−1119 and IRAS 22223+4327 has been carried out.We have also made a contemporary abundance analysis of the high Galactic latitude supergiants BD+39• 4926 and HD 107369. The former is heavily depleted in refractories and estimated [Zn/H] of −0.7 dex most likely gives initial metallicity of the star. For HD 107369 the abundances of α and Fe-peak elements are similar to those of halo objects and moderate deficiency of s-process elements is seen. IRAS 07140−2321, despite being a short-period binary with a circumstellar shell, does not exhibit selective depletion of refractory elements.We have compiled the stellar parameters and abundances for post-AGB stars with s-process enhancement, those showing significant depletion of condensable elements and those showing neither. The compilation shows that the s-process-enhanced group contains a very small number of binaries, and observed [α/Fe] are generally similar to thick-disc values. It is likely that they represent AGB evolution of single stars.The compilation of the depleted group contains a larger fraction of binaries and generally supports the hypothesis of dusty discs surrounding binary post-AGB stars inferred via the shape of their spectral energy distribution and mid-infrared interferometry. IRAS 07140−2321 and BD+39• 4926 are difficult to explain with this scenario and indicate the existence of an additional parameter/condition needed to explain the depletion phenomenon. However, the conditions for discernible depletion, minimum temperature of 5000 K and initial metallicity larger than −1.0 dex found from our earlier work still serve as useful criteria.

A large sample of carbon‐enhanced metal‐poor stars enriched in s‐process elements (CEMP‐s) have been observed in the Galactic halo. These stars of low mass (M∼ 0.9 M⊙) are located on the main‐sequence or the red‐giant phase, and do not undergo third dredge‐up (TDU) episodes. The s‐process enhancement is most plausibly due to accretion in a binary system from a more massive companion when on the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phase (now a white dwarf). In order to interpret the spectroscopic observations, updated AGB models are needed to follow in detail the s‐process nucleosynthesis. We present nucleosynthesis calculations based on AGB stellar models obtained with Frascati Raphson‐Newton Evolutionary Code (franec) for low initial stellar masses and low metallicities. For a given metallicity, a wide spread in the abundance of the s‐process elements is obtained by varying the amount of 13C and its profile in the pocket, where the 13C(α, n)16O reaction is the major neutron source, releasing neutrons in radiative conditions during the interpulse phase. We also account for the second neutron source 22Ne(α, n)25Mg, partially activated during convective thermal pulses. We discuss the surface abundance of elements from carbon to bismuth, for AGB models of initial masses M= 1.3–2 M⊙, low metallicities ([Fe/H] from −1 down to −3.6) and for different 13C‐pocket efficiencies. In particular, we analyse the relative behaviour of the three s‐process peaks: light‐s (ls at magic neutron number N= 50), heavy‐s (hs at N= 82) and lead (N= 126). Two s‐process indicators, [hs/ls] and [Pb/hs], are needed in order to characterize the s‐process distribution. In the on‐line material, we provide a set of data tables with surface predictions. Our final objective is to provide a full set of theoretical models of low‐mass low‐metallicity s‐process‐enhanced stars. In a forthcoming paper, we will test our results through a comparison with observations of CEMP‐s stars.

Background The aim of this review was to establish the current epidemiology of taeniosis, cysticercosis and trichinellosis among humans and animals in Iran by carrying out a comprehensive assessment of published articles reporting on these foodborne zoonotic diseases across the country. Methods The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guideline was used in the search for relevant published articles reporting on cysticercosis, taeniosis and trichinellosis in Iran using a number of appropriate key words. The search was conducted through PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, SpringerLink, SCOPUS, WHOLIS, FAO and CDC. Published scientific articles including journals, books and book chapters reporting on cysticercosis, taeniosis and trichinellosis in Iran for the period between 1967 and 2018 were selected. Results A total of 37 articles met the search criteria and were incorporated in this review. Of these, 10 (27%) reported on human taeniosis, 15 (40.5%) on cysticercosis (10 on Taenia saginata and five on Taenia spp. cysticercosis) and 12 (32.5%) on trichinellosis. T. saginata was implicated in all human taeniosis cases. All Taenia spp. cysticercosis cases were reported among domesticated pigs and wild animals. A case of neurocysticercosis was reported in a male patient at Shohada Hospital in Tehran. Eleven (91.7%) of the 12 studies reported on trichinellosis among wild animals, while one (8.3%) study detected anti‐Trichinella IgG in 8 (2.2%) of the 364 at‐risk human beings tested. Nevertheless, most of these studies were carried out in northern Iran. Conclusion This review found T. saginata to be the most prevalent and of greater economic and public health significance in Iran. However, T. solium and Trichinella spp. were of little significance to human health. More studies should focus on other regions besides northern Iran.
