Triceps surae elasticity modulus measured by shear wave elastography is not correlated to the plantar flexion torque

Abstract: Background: Supersonic Shear Imaging (SSI) is a technique which analyses quantitatively the tissue properties in real time. The relation between joint torque and Young's modulus (E) of the agonist muscles is important for obtaining stratification values and ranges of normality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra and intersessions reliability of the E values of the Achilles tendon and medial gastrocnemius muscle, bilaterally, during rest, and correlate them with the isometric plantarflexion peak to… Show more

“…Lima et al reported that the elasticity of the MG was not correlated to ankle plantar flexion strength. 28 Csapo et al described no correlations between muscle strength and total amount of non-contractile tissues within the triceps surae. 24 Accordingly, muscle strength might not contribute to muscle elasticity, which reflects the amount of non-contractile tissues.…”

“…This is in accordance with studies investigating the relationship between muscle strength and elastic properties. Lima ( 22) used elastography to compare elastic properties of the gastrocnemius and soleus muscles to force generated by them (22). They concluded that elasticity of these muscles does not correlate to force.…”

“…Results were grouped according to the type and mode of action of elastography for better homogeneity and consistency within the results. Of the 21 articles included, seven articles investigated strain elastography where strain ratio was calculated as a semi-quantitative measure of stiffness [27,[32][33][34][35][36][37], eleven investigated shear wave imaging presenting results as either shear wave velocity (SWV) [28-30, 38-40, 47] or modulus [31,[41][42][43], two investigated continuous shear wave elastography (cSWE) [44,45], while the last article assessed threedimensional shear wave elastography (3D SWE) [46]. A summary of the overall quality ratings for the measurement properties of each elastography method and their statistical results are reported in Table 4 and Table 5.…”
