Tribotechnical properties of coatings on titanium alloys

Abstract: We compare the antifriction properties of different types of coatings on titanium alloys under conditions of boundary friction as applied to parts of the hydraulic cylinders of an aircraft. We show that gasthermal titanium carbide coatings cladded with nickel and with both copper and nickel have better antifriction characteristics than ones obtained by chrome electroplating, nickel chemoplating, thermooxidation, anodization, etc.Titanium alloys are known to have low antifriction properties and to interact very… Show more

“…The methods of thermodiffusion surface hardening of titanium alloys and, specifically, the procedures of thermal oxidation and nitriding have serious advantages over the other available methods under service conditions excluding the application of high contact stresses (>4 MPa) (Gorynin & Chechulin, 1990;Nazarenko et al, 1998). They are technologically simple, guarantee the reliable physical and chemical characteristics of treated surfaces, and do not require any additional technological procedures.…”

“…For example, it can be used to make components of bearings, engines, and hydraulic cylinders of cars operating under boundary lubrication conditions in tribo-pair with bronze. Parts made of titanium allow both the enhancement of the resource and the reduction in the weight of the vehicle and, as a result, reduction in energy costs for maintenance [27,[31][32][33][34][35][36].…”

“…If nitridation processes are clearly related with the use of hydrazine, regarding the titanium, this element could come from different sources, both cometary or from the spacecraft. For instance, TiN ion-plasma coatings are common for hardening of surfaces of titanium and its alloys in the aircraft industry …”
