Tribology Study of Reduced Graphene Oxide Sheets on Silicon Substrate Synthesized via Covalent Assembly

Abstract: Reduced graphene oxide (RGO) sheets were covalently assembled onto silicon wafers via a multistep route based on the chemical adsorption and thermal reduction of graphene oxide (GO). The formation and microstructure of RGO were analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and water contact angle (WCA) measurements. Characterization by atomic force microscopy (AFM) was performed to evaluate the morphology… Show more

“…Ou [32,130] investigated the micro-/nano-tribological behaviors of 3-aminopropyl triethoxy-silane (APTES)-modified GO and RGO sheets (APTES-GO, APTES-RGO) on silicon substrate as solid lubricants. Results show that GO and RGO exhibit friction-reducing and antiwear properties at low applied loads.…”

“…5,12,15À22 As reported in our previous work, the dual layer film of APTES-GO is hydrophilic, possessing relatively low friction coefficient and good wear resistance. 5 In this report, to increase the hydrophobicity of the film, an outerlayer of OTS-SAM is introduced, which is expected to reduce the friction and boost the antiwear life. Thus, a film with sandwiched microstructure and desirable composition was constructed, aiming at developing thin-film lubricants suitable for NEMS/MEMS and other micro/nanodevices.…”

“…However, it should be mentioned that the average COF of the specimens with the rGO layer was in the range of 0.3-0.4, which was higher than those of the graphene or the rGO coatings (0.1-0.25) reported in previous studies. [35][36][37][38] The higher COF was attributed to the fact that the CNT and AgNW layers below the rGO layer caused the surface roughness of the coating to increase, which in turn led to the increase in COF compared with smooth graphene or rGO coatings without such underlayers.…”
