With the rapid development of industry, individuals paid increasing demanding on the friction‐reducing and antiwear properties of lubricants under harsh service conditions. Here, the attapulgite base grease and attapulgite greases with grephene were successfully synthesised. The tribological behaviours of the greases were comparatively investigated using a SRV‐IV tribometer with the ball‐on‐disk configuration. The results show that the attapulgite grease with graphene presents better friction‐reducing and antiwear properties than the attapulgite base grease, especially at high load, frequency and temperature. The friction‐reducing and antiwear mechanism was determined through the analysis of worn surfaces and tribofilms formed on it. The results revealed that a tribofilm composed with Fe, Fe3C, Fe2O3, FeOOH, Al2O3, SiO2, graphene, attapulgite and organic compounds was formed on the worn surface, which is responsible for the excellent tribological properties of the attapulgite grease with graphene. Thus, as‐prepared attapulgite grease with graphene shows great potential in the lubrication for mechanical equipment operated under harsh conditions.

The advanced nano-additives can effectively improve the tribological properties of grease, which can greatly reduce friction consumption. Therefore, we prepared nickel nanoparticles by direct reduction method using Ni(HCOO)2 • 2H2O as the basic raw material. The morphology and structure of the nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), FT-IR spectrometer (FT-IR) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). In order to investigate the lubrication performance of nickel nanoparticles in lithium grease, friction experiments were carried out on four-ball friction tester and TE77 ball-on-plate reciprocating model. Then, the worn surfaces were analyzed by scanning electron microscope and white light interferometry. Meanwhile, the element composition and valence state on friction surfaces were detected by energy dispersive spectrometer and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Based on the experimental results, it was concluded that the nickel nanoparticles can effective improved the tribological properties by interlayer sliding. Moreover, the nickel nanoparticles could promote the formation of friction film on boundary lubrication surface and chemical reaction film between friction pairs. This study could provide a new direction for metal nano-additives to improve the tribological properties of grease.

Thickener plays a significant role on the performance of grease, including rheological property, chemical and thermal stability, colloidal and mechanical stability, and so forth. Here, lithium complex-calcium sulfonate (L/C) greases were synthesized via regulating lithium complex soap and calcium sulfonate in the molar ratio of 1:2, 2:1 and 1:1, along with thickening the polyalphaolefin (PAO40). The physicochemical properties, corrosion resistance and tribological performance were evaluated in detail, with lithium complex grease and calcium sulfonate grease as a comparison. The results show that the as-prepared L/C greases have good corrosion resistance for low-carbon steel due to unique reversed micelles of calcium sulfonate and sealing function. The regulation of lithium complex soap and calcium sulfonate in different molar ratios achieves the considerable adjustability of grease's physicochemical and tribological properties due to the component/structure of thickener and its sensitivity to base oil. The grease with formulation of L/C = 1:2 gives the best lubrication function depending on not only the thickener's component and structure, but also the synergistic lubrication of grease-film and tribo-chemical reaction film composed of Fe 2 O 3 , FeO(OH), CaO, CaCO 3 and LiOH.
