“…The wear volume loss of both coatings and counterparts was measured using confocal scanning laser microscope (CSLM, Olympus 4100, Olympus, Tokyo, Japan). The wear rate is calculated as: K = V/SF [20], where K is the wear rate with the unit of mm 3 /(N·m), V is the wear volume loss in mm 3 , S is the total sliding distance in m, and F is the normal load in N. Figure 1 shows the SEM micrographs of the Fe 59 Cr 12 Nb 5 B 20 Si 4 feedstock powder. Apparently, the majority of Fe-based particles exhibit spherical or near-spherical shapes, providing good flow ability during the spraying process.…”

“…Coating resistance to wear is critical for vehicle engine applications where severe wear is present, such as piston rings and cylinder liners [3,17]. A good characterization and understanding of wear mechanisms with increased temperature are substantially meaningful to design the practical application of amorphous coatings.…”

“…Graphite porosities, which are intrinsic to the material itself (cylinder liner is generally made of cast iron), present a uniform distribution of cavities. 14 Both features act as oil reservoirs and pathways, ensuring hydrodynamic lubrication. In some cases, an otherwise stable and minimal wear situation of piston ring and cylinder liner may aggravate within a short period of time due to severe accelerated wear and elevated component temperature.…”

“…In this regard, serious attempts have been made to develop various approaches to lower friction and wear, particularly in engines and transmissions, as a large portion of fuel energy (approximately 17 per cent) is wasted in these components (Holmberg et al, 2012). Along with methods that have been widely applied to surface modification and engineering, such as the utilization of wearprotective coatings and surface patterning (Khadem et al, 2014;Penkov et al, 2015;Hong et al, 2015;Kurniawan and Ko, 2015;Kim et al, 2015), the modification of lubricants by means of improving their chemical formulation or introducing nano-additives seems quite promising for the reduction friction and wear, and thus, the improvement of fuel economy (Wong and Tung, 2016;Ahmer et al, 2016;Dai et al, 2016).…”
