Tribological Behavior of Aluminium Metal Matrix Composite with Addition of Bamboo Leaf Ash by GRA-Taguchi Method

Abstract: The bamboo leaf ash (BLA) which was extruded from agro waste was used as a particulate reinforcement to produce economical AMMCs. The dry sliding wear behavior of Al-4.5 wt.% Cu alloy with the addition of 2, 4 and 6 wt.% of BLA by stir casting method was analyzed using pin-on-disc wear test apparatus. The typical L27 orthogonal array was selected to perform the experimental work. The effect of the testing parameters on wear rate, SWR and COF of the fabricated aluminium composites were studied using Grey relati… Show more

“…Among the variants, the best sliding wear resistance was demonstrated by composite filled with 4 wt % of the waste. The same authors, in another literature report, used the Taguchi approach to determine the influence of the tested parameters on the wear rate, specific wear rate and COF of aluminum-bamboo leaf ash composites [ 45 ]. Taguchi method is often used to select the most important control factors influencing the tribological performance of studied material, minimizing the number of experiments.…”

“…On the worn-out surface, the different localized delamination areas are joined to form larger craters. More so, from the worn surface, there is mechanical mixed layer (MML) formation due to the fine size debris that adheres within the cavity formed by the delaminated layer [12,17]. The rise in temperature as a result of heat generated by friction facilitates the formation of the oxide of Al through oxidation.…”

“…Single reinforcement is the usage of a single ceramic reinforcement or agro/industrial wastes ash in a matrix, which is normally termed "monolithic reinforcement", while hybrid reinforcements could be such that there will be a combination of two or more ceramic particulates, two or more agro/industrial waste ash particulates, or two or more ceramic and agro/industrial wastes ash particulates [1][2][3]10,11]. The inclusion of these reinforcing particulates into the matrix alloy is for the enhancement of the properties of the MMCs produced [12,13]. Recently, the usage of these agro/industrial wastes ashes as reinforcements in MMCs production either as monolithic or hybrid reinforcements has been the focus of many researchers.…”

“…Among Al-alloys, 6061Al-alloy is widely used. A number of materials such as SiC, Al2O3, B4C, TiB2, ZrO2, SiO2 and graphite are being used as reinforcements to improve the properties of 6061Al alloy [7][8][9]. Type of reinforcements and methods of fabrication influences the properties of aluminum RESEARCH composites.…”
